Eastern Washington gets a shot of Padron

(Stop it. Like you wouldn’t have gone there too.)

A little over a month after being granted a release from his SMU scholarship, Kyle Padron is preparing to settle into a new collegiate home.

ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad is reporting that the former Mustangs quarterback has decided to transfer to Eastern Washington and will enroll at the school this summer. Padron told Schad that his new program “prepares a QB to get to the next level.”

As the Eagles are a Div. 1-AA (FCS) program, Padron won’t be forced to sit out a season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules and will be eligible to play immediately. He will have one season of eligibility remaining, although he has yet to use his redshirt year.

Beginning two-thirds of the way through his true freshman season in 2009, Padron had started 21 straight games for the Mustangs, including all 14 in 2010. Benched after back-to-back interceptions in SMU’s 2011 season opener, however, Padron didn’t start another game for the Mustangs the rest of the year.

In 2010, his only season as a full-time starter, Padron completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 3,828 yards and 31 touchdowns.
