While Michigan’s scrimmage wasn’t open for long to the media, the Detroit News’ David Goricki has an update from the scrimmage where Tate Forcier spent much of his time with the number one offense.Goricki reported “Forcier dropped back and delivered a pass over the middle, 20 yards downfield. Brandon Minor jumped and grabbed the ball... On the next play, Forcier fumbled."While that was the extent of the action that the media was allowed to see, one of the very real dangers of having a true freshman stepping into the spread offense is ball security. Even reading a report on Forcier’s fumble probably has Michigan fans worried about the evolution of the Wolverine offense behind a true freshman. When Notre Dame opened up it’s one-game version of the spread offense versus Georgia Tech during their 3-9 season, Demitrius Jones spent much of the first quarter fumbling the ball to the Yellow Jacket defense, an offense that was assembled around Rich Rodriguez’s spread at West Virginia. After last season’s mediocre performance by Rodriguez’s squad, it’ll be interesting to see how long the Michigan faithful, and the school’s adminstration, wait for Rodriguez’s spread offense to take shape. And with a true freshman running the show, expect some growing pains.
