Former West Virginia offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen has found a new home as the OC for the startup Charlotte 49er’s.
Mullen, a one-time quarterbacks coach at Wake Forest, will be reunited with former Demon Deacons defensive coordinator Brad Lambert, who was tabbed as the 49er’s head coach a few days ago.
Charlotte will field its first football squad in 2013 at the FCS level.
Mullen’s three-year stint at WVU was much-maligned. From 2008-10, the Mountaineers averaged 24.5, 26.2 and 25.2 points per game, respectively. However, more than a sizable faction of the West Virginia faithful will remember inconsistent, turnover-plagued offensive schemes.
And bubble screens. Lots of bubble screens.
Mullen was ultimately pushed out the door -- along with offensive line coach Dave Johnson -- by new WVU athletic director Oliver Luck in December in favor of Oklahoma State OC Dana Holgorsen. Holgorsen was also named West Virginia’s head coach-in-waiting for 2012.
Mullen was also a reported finalist for the Kent State job before the Golden Flashes hired Ohio State assistant Darrell Hazell.
