For just the second time the last three years, Nebraska will start a game without Tommy Armstrong under center.
In last Saturday’s win over Minnesota, Armstrong sustained an injury to his hamstring as he scored the game-winning touchdown against Minnesota. Because the issue didn’t clear itself up in the week leading into the Maryland game, the senior will be sidelined against the Terps and won’t play on Senior Day in his home finale.
Armstrong has started 35 games the past three seasons, and a school record-tying 43 overall. Through 11 weeks of the current season, Armstrong is seventh amongst Big Ten quarterbacks in passing efficiency.
As NU looks to stay in the Big Ten West race -- they need to win their last two, plus have Wisconsin lose at least one -- they will turn their quarterbacking hopes over to Ryker Fyfe.
A fifth-year senior, Fyfe will be making his second career start. In the first, Fyfe tossed four interceptions in a loss to Purdue last year. This season, he’s completed 7-of-24 passes for 93 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
