Injury bug strikes again for ‘Zona, this time for backup QB

Preseason camp has not been good to Arizona -- or, their in-state rival, for that matter -- when it comes to dealing with the injury bug. The Wildcats have already lost four starters and backups to likely season-ending injuries, and another handful of players to less serious bumps and bruises.

Backup quarterback Bryson Beirne (pictured, No. 17), who is the latest to succumb to injures, could be somewhere in the middle. Coach Mike Stoops said after practice Monday that Beirne suffered a sprained ACL over the weekend and has been sidelined indefinitely.

“We’re going to treat it and see what he can do, try to rehabilitate him,” Stoops said. “At this point, we don’t want to operate.

“Some people can stabilize their knee with a brace, and we’re going to try that, see if that works for him. We’ve got to rehab for a while and, hopefully, get him back here in a week and see what he can do.”
Beirne was slated as the Wildcats’ No. 2 quarterback behind Nick Foles as fellow QB Matt Scott uses 2011 to redshirt. With Beirne out, true freshman Daxx Garman could see plenty of second-team reps.
