Jeremy Hill’s big day on ground paces LSU over Auburn

Auburn made things at least a little interesting in the second half but every time they made some noise, LSU had a response ready to go. It usually came in the form of a touchdown.

Leading the way in LSU’s 35-21 home victory against Auburn was Jeremy Hill. Hill had a career day with a career best 182 rushing yards to go with three touchdowns as well as a couple of scores he set up with long runs deep in to Auburn territory. Auburn had nobody who could slow him down. Hill’s dominance on the ground was set-up by a strong advantage in the trenches for LSU, dominating the line of scrimmage on offense. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger passed for 229 yards and a touchdown behind the protection provided up front as well.

Auburn had their own running back put in a good effort. Tre Mason carried the football 26 times and rushed for 132 yards and scored two touchdowns. But any time it looked as though Auburn had picked up some momentum against LSU’s defense, LSU’s offense wasted no time striking right back. With Auburn digging a hole early in the game, there just was not enough time to battle back although they tried everything they could.

The conversation following this game will focus on LSU, who moves to 4-0 with the win. Visions of another colossal clash between LSU and Alabama on November 9 are starting to come in to focus for some, but let’s hit the pause button on that conversation. After all, LSU has a road game next week in Athens, Georgia to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia had a struggle for a while Saturday against North Texas, but has already taken down one SEC contender in South Carolina. Next week should be a huge game. But LSU also has road games in division play to get through before even thinking about Alabama. After Georgia next week, LSU travels to Mississippi State the following week and then visits Ole Miss two weeks later.

LSU should be considered one of the top contenders in the BCS picture. Let’s see what they can do on the road in SEC play against another conference contender.
