A week after the Demolition by the Domers and Texas has a new play-caller in Jay Norvell and a new quarterback in Jerrod Heard.
A ballyhooed redshirt freshman from Denton, Texas, Heard garnered the first start of his career in favor of a struggling Tyrone Swoopes and immediately did something Swoopes did not against Notre Dame - lead a touchdown drive.
After forcing a three-and-out on Rice’s opening possession, Texas accepted the ball at its own 20 and moved 80 yards in nine plays for a touchdown.
The drive opened with a Johnathan Gray rush for no gain and a Heard option for a loss of a yard, but Heard converted the 3rd-and-11 with a 35-yard dash (much of which was negated by a penalty.)
Heard then rushed for another five yards, then hit Gray on an eight-yard swing pass. After a loss of a yard by Heard, Gray ran for nine yards and backup D’Onta Foreman bulled for three yards. Heard then hit the other Foreman, wide receiver Armanti Foreman, for a 32-yard touchdown.
In all, Heard totaled four carries for 38 yards and completed both of his throws for 40 yards and a score.
Texas holds a 14-0 lead at the moment as Daje Johnson followed another Rice punt with an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
