Kevin Sumlin isn’t interested in talking about Johnny Manziel

Predictably, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was asked about Johnny Manziel during his press conference at SEC media day on Tuesday. It’s not unwarranted, given Manziel was a transcendent player in his two years in College Station.

But man, Sumlin really had no interest in entertaining a question about Manziel’s partying habits. He seemed to have the response rehearsed, since he was grinning through the entire thing. Here’s what he said:

“Is this the SEC media days, right? No, that’s a great question about the Cleveland Browns. Anybody else got something?”

NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread made this observation:

I swear, TAMU coach Kevin Sumlin looked young before he had Manziel, looked old while he had him, and now looks younger again at #SECMD14

Sure, Manziel was a headache in terms of his celebrity status off the field -- but Texas A&M isn’t where it is as a national brand (mainly for recruiting) without him.

As for Manziel’s successor, Sumlin pre-emptively quashed any questions about who will start for the Aggies this year. It’ll either be Kyle Allen or Kenny Hill, and Sumlin said he’ll make the announcement a few weeks before the season.
