After starting all but one game last season, running back C.J. Gable has been, basically, a nonentity in 2009.
Gable has exactly 21 reasons why he’s considering moving on from the Trojans and into the NFL for the 2010 draft. That figure is the total number of carries he’s been given this year, and it’s providing the impetus for the redshirt junior to question what his future holds.
“It’s been frustrating,” Gable said. “Anybody would be frustrated. ... Why would you play if you don’t care whether you get in or not?
“I care because I want to play. But I can’t do anything about it but keep on doing what I’m doing, which is work hard and let everybody see what I can do.”
Gable said he would talk to head coach Pete Carroll about his options for the future, and one of the big factors in his decision will be playing time.
For his part, Carroll is very complimentary of Gable for how he’s handled the situation.
“He had a great day (Sunday). He was one of the best guys on the field,” Carroll said. “With Allen Bradford‘s emergence and Joe [McKnight] getting the ball more, he kind of fell out of the rotation. But he’s been very tough about it. He’s a tough kid. He’s not going to gripe or complain. He just wants more, like anybody else would in his situation.”
