MACK BROWN ON HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR COLT MCCOY

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had a very promising redshirt freshman season in 2006, but he followed that up with a disappointing 2007.So a lot of college football fans have been taken by surprise by how well McCoy is playing in 2008. But as No. 5 Texas prepares to take on No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday, Longhorns coach Mack Brown thinks it’s time for people to re-consider whether McCoy’s 2007 season was really all that disappointing."Let me get this straight,” Brown said today in an ESPN interview, when asked about the perception that McCoy had a bad 2007. “He threw for 3300 yards, he won 10 games last year, he threw 22 touchdowns, and he was the offensive [MVP] of the Holiday Bowl against Arizona State. But he had a bad year? So the expectations and the standards are set here really high, and that’s the way we like it."I like the way Brown takes up for his player, and I like the way he puts a positive spin on his comments at the end by saying he likes high expectations. But I also think Brown is conveniently overlooking a key point about the criticisms of McCoy.The issue with McCoy last season was that he made too many mistakes, including 18 interceptions. This season McCoy is avoiding those mistakes, with only three picks through five games and an incredible 79.2% completion rate. If McCoy keeps limiting the mistakes, he’ll be embraced as he was in 2006.
