Army issued a press release today stating that “a major announcement regarding college football” would be made at Yankee Stadium this coming Monday.
Needless to say, that announcement will involve Army, Notre Dame and a game at the new Palace of Greed & Excess.
The game is expected to be played next season, with the Irish being billed as the home team.
Army and Notre Dame played every year at the old Yankee Stadium between 1925 and 1946. When rumors of a return to Yankee Stadium first came to light, it was believed the game would be played in 2013 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first meeting between the schools at that ballpark.
In addition to the game against the Irish next season, it’s rumored that Army will also announce a series of games -- one per year -- at the stadium between 2011 and 2013. The Associated Press reported that Rutgers and, possibly, Syracuse would be involved in those contests.
