Mangino’s departure led to player’s return

Up until the point of Mark Mangino‘s departure from Kansas, running back/linebacker Angus Quigley had no intention of petitioning the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility.

However, once Mangino and the school “parted ways”, and Turner Gill was brought on board as the sideline replacement, Quigley quickly changed course. That change, of course, resulted in Quigley being given an additional season of eligibility by the NCAA, the school announced Thursday.

I wasn’t planning on coming back, but I love KU and I love playing football,” Quigley said. “I heard about the new coaching staff and the way they were going to coach and the values they were going to instill and it interested me. I went to the first team meeting with him (Gill). He is a players’ coach and is respectful.

“Everyone is going to start out with a clean slate and it is a good opportunity for me.”

Quigley was a Jayhawk signee in 2005, but did not play either that year or in 2006 due to injuries. He played running back in 2007 and 2008 after returning to health, and moved to linebacker in 2009.

Gill has already told Quigley that he will be back in the backfield in 2010.
