Miami’s Maryland, Tide’s Lyons ring bell on HOF membership

We’re still just a little over an hour away from the official unveiling of the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011, but two more inductees have been confirmed.

As intimated by first-year head coach Al Golden Monday on Twitter, former Miami defensive lineman Russell Maryland received the call and will be inducted into the hall. Maryland, who played for the ‘Canes from 1986-90, becomes the eighth player or coach from the school to be enshrined into the HOF.

Somewhat surprisingly, though, is the fact that former Miami and Oklahoma State head coach Jimmy Johnson did not become the ninth ex-Hurricane so honored, with the Miami Herald reporting that the current FOX NFL studio analyst was not elected.

In addition to Maryland, it’s also been confirmed that former Alabama defensive lineman Marty Lyons (1975-78) has been elected as well. Both Lyons and Maryland were in New York City Tuesday morning and took part in ringing the NASDAQ opening bell.

As has previously been reported, former Ohio State running back Eddie George and ex-Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr will also be members of this year’s class, which will consist of 16 individuals -- 14 players and two coaches.

UPDATED 10:27 a.m. ET: The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that ex-Air Force head coach Fisher DeBerry has been elected into the Hall of Fame.
