Miss. State’s Dan Mullen: ‘We’ll win a championship here one day’

It isn’t far-fetched for the head coach of the nation’s No. 1 team to believe he’ll eventually win a national championship at his current location. It is pertinent for Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, who is continually mentioned as one of the top coaching candidates for bigger jobs.

When Mullen arrived in Starkville, Miss. after serving as Florida’s offensive coordinator during two national championship runs, it was thought to be a stepping stone.

All of that is changing.

“Once you change the way you think, everything starts changing,” Mullen told USA TODAY. “We still haven’t arrived yet. We haven’t won any championships, but I believe we’ll win a championship here one day.”

To reiterate: Mullen believes he’ll win a championship at Mississippi State one day.

This is an important statement, particularly since Will Muschamp‘s seat in Gainesville with the Florida Gators is in flames. It’s inevitable for Mullen’s name to be attached to a potential opening at Florida if Muschamp is eventually dismissed.

However, the fact Mullen sees a singular vision at Mississippi State -- a university now pumping money into the football program -- makes the possibility of taking another job far more unlikely.
