Mississippi State to be without top WR for bowl game

Mississippi State took home their second straight Egg Bowl Saturday night, but the win over in-state rival Ole Miss didn’t come without a pretty significant loss.

Head coach Dan Mullen announced Monday afternoon that wide receiver Chad Bumphis has a broken collarbone and will miss the Bulldogs’ bowl game regardless of when it’s played. It’s believed Bumphis suffered the injury on a second-quarter reception, and an MRI performed in the days after the game revealed the extent of the damage.

The “good” news for Bumphis and MSU is that surgery will not be required to fix the break, and he’s expected to be healed in time to participate in spring practice.

The sophomore is far and away the Bulldogs’ top receiver statistically, leading the team in receptions (44), receiving yards (634) and receiving touchdowns (5).
