Northwest Missouri State claims third Division II title in four years

With Mount Union and North Dakota State downed, Northwest Missouri State is now college football’s strongest pound-for-pound ongoing dynasty.

The Bearcats claimed their second consecutive and third Division II national championship in the past four years by stomping North Alabama 29-3 at a snow-covered Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. Northwest Missouri State broke open a game that was scoreless through one quarter and 7-3 at the half with two Phil Jackson touchdown runs, a Kyle Zimmerman touchdown pass and a safety thrown in for good measure.

Top-seeded Northwest Missouri State limited No. 3 North Alabama to 22 total rushing yards on 33 credited attempts and just 179 yards on 41 pass attempts.

Jackson rushed 14 times for 76 yards and two scores, while Zimmerman completed 13-of-26 passes for 100 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Randy Schmidt rushed 14 times for a game-high 96 yards and completed 5-of-8 passes for 12 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, Northwest Missouri State extends its lead as the best current Division II program with six overall national titles. Better yet, since hiring head coach Adam Dorrel the Bearcats are 76-8 overall and 55-2 with three national championships since 2013.

Another title in hand, Northwest Missouri State can now soak in their championship glory, enjoy a well-earned Christmas break and gear up for another....

Oh.

In reality, Dorrel’s departure has been known for a while and, obviously, didn’t come close to derailing the hardest-charging freight train in college football today.
