Penn State not wearing names on jerseys today

Penn State purists will be rejoicing today. For homecoming, Penn State is wearing “retro” jerseys, stripping the names from the back of the jerseys for at least one week. By retro, this would fall under 2011 era, after Penn State removed the white collar stripe from the home jersey.

Bill O’Brien made the decision to add names to the uniforms in 2012 as a way of recognizing Penn State players that chose to stay with the program following the NCAA sanctions levied that summer. Penn State has kept the names on the jerseys for every game since until today.

James Franklin has been asked about the uniforms multiple times since being named the head coach, but he never really shed any light on his plans for the uniforms. Perhaps this was an idea that had been floating around for a while. Will it remain, now that Penn State is once again eligible to participate in postseason play? We may just have to wait to find out the next game for that answer.

Penn State kicks off with Northwestern at noon eastern for homecoming.
