Steve Spurrier will now be paid $4 million to coach South Carolina and hate on your favorite team.
Via Columbia, S.C. newspaper The State comes a report that Spurrier will have his salary bumped from $3.3. million to $4 million per year, which will put him in the top 10 of college football’s highest-paid coaches.
It’s a well-earned raise for the 68-year-old Spurrier, whose current deal runs through 2017. Three of the four double digit-win seasons in South Carolina history have come under Spurrier, who’s Gamecocks won 11 games in 2011, 2012 and 2013. While South Carolina hasn’t been to a BCS bowl and only has made one appearance in the SEC title game under Spurrier, he’s ushered in unprecedented success in Columbia since taking over in 2005.
It’s sort of odd to think Spurrier, if he finishes out his contract, will have spent more time at South Carolina (2005-2017) than at Florida (1990-2001), where he won a national championship and won at least 10 games in nine of his 11 seasons.
Spurrier’s entire staff at South Carolina will receive pay raises, too, according to The State.
