Considering the state of the position over the last six seasons, one would assume Texas head coach Charlie Strong would be interested in Hellen Keller if she could deliver the ball on time between linebackers and safeties.
But a report out of Austin says Strong and his Horns have no interest in a former five-star recruit that previously had interest in Texas and sits just right around the corner. Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com reported Sunday evening Texas will not pursue former Texas A&M quarterback Kyler Murray, who came on the market late last week.
The two sides had a dalliance late in the last recruiting cycle, with the quarterback and four-star wide receiver DaMarkus Lodge (who signed with Ole Miss) making an unannounced visit to Austin.
Murray stuck with Texas A&M and posted an, uh, up-and-down true freshman season. He saw sparing action in four of the Aggies’ first six games before replacing a struggling Kyle Allen for an Oct. 31 game against South Carolina and promptly completed 20-of-28 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown with no interceptions while rushing 20 times for 156 yards and another score. But that was as good as it got for Murray in College Station. He threw three interceptions in a loss to Auburn a week later and finished his 2015 season throwing five touchdowns with seven picks while getting benched in Texas A&M’s final two games against Vanderbilt and LSU.
Six weeks after his first start against South Carolina, Murray was gone.
Texas’s lack of interest could stem from his less-than-flattering departure from Texas A&M, or the very real belief that he’s simply too small to be a Power 5 quarterback. Richardson reported there was another reason.

Shane Buechele is a four-star recruit out of Arlington, Texas, that doesn’t blow the naked eye away with his arm or his legs, but he may be the closest thing to Colt McCoy since the man himself left Austin in 2009. Sam Ehlinger is an Austin product who became the first junior to ever win the Associated Press player of the year in Texas.
There was a time, however brief, that Murray and Texas may have been a match. But now it appears Strong is content to sink or swim with his own guys.
