For the past 15 games, Jake Heaps has been the starter at quarterback for BYU.
Thanks to his production, or lack thereof, during the first third of the 2011 season, Heaps won’t get the opportunity to push the streak to 16.
Head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Friday that Riley Nelson will start at QB for the 3-2 Cougars against San Jose State Saturday.
“My decision to start Riley on Saturday is based on the productivity of our offense at the end of last week’s victory over Utah State,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “After coming out of the game last week, Jake has responded very well with an excellent week of practice and he is eager for his next opportunity. I have confidence that both quarterbacks can lead this team.”
BYU will enter today’s game 106th in the country in scoring, averaging just 18.2 points per game. Their highest scoring output of the season came in a 27-24 win over Utah State two Fridays ago; Nelson replaced an uneven Heaps late in the third quarter and led the Cougars to two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Nelson’s last start came in September of last season.
