Safety Shaq Thompson follows Cal assistant to Washington

Hiring defensive assistant Tosh Lupoi away from Cal is already showing its benefit for Washington on the recruiting trail.

With just one day before National Signing Day, one of the top prospects in the country, former Cal commit Shaq Thompson, has decided he will follow Lupoi to the Huskies. The highly-touted safety and the No. 7 prospect in the country according to Rivals.com made the announcement via Twitter last night.

When Lupoi left Cal for Washington earlier this month, the Golden Bears knew they would be losing one of the top recruiters in college football. And, indeed, upon learning the news, the five-star safety tweeted “I have a lot of thinking to do.”

It was thought by some that perhaps Thompson and Oregon commit Arik Armstead could be a package deal. However, that clearly is not the case; Thompson reportedly visited UW over the weekend.

The Huskies currently have the 26th-best recruiting class according to Rivals with the addition of Thompson. Still, there are 24 hours before NLI will be faxed in, an eternity when you are talking about the decisions and last-minute recruitment of high school seniors.
