Well, y’all can turn off the air raid sirens and stop the presses. Steve Spurrier has explained his comments from Monday in which he questioned whether star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was going to be healthy enough to play the season-opener against North Carolina on Aug. 29.
“[I]f (Clowney’s shoulder) doesn’t come around real soon, we may play without him the first game,” Spurrier said just before adding what appeared to be a good ol’ fashioned troll of OBC proportions:
“We’ve got a bunch of hurt guys who act like they are really hurt so right now they may not play. … I’ll handle those guys. We’re not depending on them. We can still field a team.”
Spurrier seemed irked that Clowney and receivers Bruce Ellington and Damiere Byrd were not at Monday’s practice, but you can chalk it up to a simple miscommunication. Spurrier said Tuesday after practice that no one had told the three that they were supposed to be there Monday.
“Jadeveon’s doing fine, Bruce is doing fine, Damiere is doing fine,” Spurrier said. “They had a communication problem, they didn’t know they were supposed to be out here watching practice, so I’m the dummy on that. Now they know they’re going to be out here watching practice. We had a communication problem and we’re ready to go.”
Clowney had been nursing a shoulder injury, but he was back practicing Tuesday along with Byrd. As of Wednesday morning, Spurrier said Clowney “is back in good graces. He’s back in the fold. He’s going to play against North Carolina.”
Crisis averted.
