Texas booster apologizes for ripping Charlie Strong hire

Texas booster Red McCombs apologized to Charlie Strong for calling the coach’s hiring a “kick in the face,” according to the San Antonio Express-News’ Mike Finger.

Finger reports McCombs told Strong he has his “full support” and apologized to the newly-hired Longhorns coach and “to anyone that might have been offended by anything I said or did.”

McCombs, the billionaire who formerly owned the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Vikings, said he was surprised his initial comments were construed as being racially biased. Prior to Strong’s hire, McCombs reportedly pushed hard for Texas to hire John Gruden -- something that, as has been the case for a few years, was a complete pipe dream.
