(Okay, one more time with the Les Miles featured image. But we’re done now. I promise.)
The anointed “game of the century”? Also done and in the books with No. 1 LSU going on the road in a tough environment, as they’ve done so many times this year, and defeating No.2 Alabama in a field goal-happy 9-6 overtime battle.
Speaking of the Tide, Alabama dropped just one spot to No. 3 after the loss, staying ahead of unbeaten teams Stanford and Boise State; Bama dropped to No. 4 in the AP and coaches poll earlier today. It’s not too surprising to see the Tide ahead of the Broncos, but the fact that Nick Saban‘s team has only dropped one position in the poll that matters the most indicates that, for now, the possibility of a rematch between the two is a little more than just a fantasy.
It’s still worth reminding that there is one month of football left to be played. Oklahoma State still sits at No. 2 and controls their BCS destiny, and there’s no guarantee Bama will stay ahead of Stanford for the remainder of the season provided the two teams win out. After all, if that ends up being the case, Stanford will have a conference championship game which could vault the Cardinal over Alabama in such a situation.
One would think Boise State’s sole remaining challenge is against TCU next week. The Broncos, provided they keep winning, are just lurking there are No. 5, waiting for a slip-up by someone. But if this latest BCS poll is indicative of anything, it’s that even a one-loss Alabama with no SEC West title could theoretically get into the national championship game over the Broncos.
Houston, the other remaining non-AQ undefeated, sits quietly at No. 11 and waiting in turn for someone to pull a Nevada on Boise State so that the Cougars could find their way into a BCS bowl.
Check out the entire BCS standings below, and let us know: does Stanford, Boise State, or both, deserve to be ahead of Alabama after this weekend?
