An injury to the starter has turned into a playing-time boon for Patrick Mahomes.
An hour or so before the start of the game against Texas, Texas Tech announced that Mahomes will get the start at quarterback for the Red Raiders. Starter Davis Webb suffered an injury to his left leg in the blowout loss to TCU last week and was on crutches this evening during pregame warm-ups.
This will mark Mahomes first career start. The good news for both the player and the team is that it will take place within the friendly confines of Lubbock’s Jones AT&T Stadium.
In place of the injured Webb, Mahomes completed 5-of-11 passes for 45 yards, one touchdown and an interceptions. The freshman has attempted 23 passes this season.
Webb is currently 47th nationally and fifth among Big 12 quarterbacks in passing efficiency. There’s no word on how much longer after today he’ll be sidelined.
