Though no one has come out and said as much, it appears the folks in Heritage Hall thought the only problem with Lane Kiffin‘s 2013 coaching staff was... Lane Kiffin.
Joining defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast and special teams coordinator John Baxter, USC announced Tommie Robinson will re-join head coach Clay Helton‘s staff as running backs coach. Receivers coach Tee Martin has remained on staff through the Kiffin, Sarkisian and now Helton eras.
“We are thrilled to welcome back Tommie to the Trojan Family,” said Helton in a statement. “He is one of the most respected running back coaches in our profession. He has had an extensive career in both the NFL and college and he will pass on that knowledge to our young running back group. I have had the good fortune to work with Tommie on two different occasions, at USC and at Memphis, and have seen firsthand how he develops young men both on and off the field. He is a true professional and a terrific recruiter.”
Robinson’s departure also means that the entirety of Strong’s original offensive staff in Austin has now left or been replaced.
Robinson was the Trojans’ running backs coach through 2013, then joined Charlie Strong‘s original staff at Texas. He returns as running backs coach and run game coordinator, which shifts Johnny Nansen from running backs to linebackers, while Tyson Helton will handle quarterbacks.
Baxter has also added tight ends to his duties, the school announced.
