North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson is out of the hospital after suffering a Grade 3 concussion Thursday night, but if the school handles his injury properly, he’ll be out for an extended period of time.Russell’s brother Harrison Wilson said that Russell wants to play in the Wolfpack’s next game on Saturday, but added, “But obviously with that concussion, that’s probably not the case."It should be several weeks, at least, before Wilson gets back on the field. Grade 3 is the most serious type of concussion, and the nature of concussions is such that after suffering one, a person is more susceptible to a second. Many sports leagues around the world, from Australian football to boxing and mixed martial arts organizations, have strict rules prohibiting athletes from participating for weeks or months after suffering concussions. American football leagues have always left it up to the player or the team, but it would be irresponsible of North Carolina State to let him play any time soon.North Carolina State will be in big trouble without Wilson; backup Daniel Evan was terrible after Wilson was carted off the field, completing four of 12 passes for 37 yards with two interceptions. Harrison Beck replaced Evans late in the fourth quarter and threw three incompletions. But the Wolfpack’s need for Wilson is less important than Wilson’s need for a healthy future, and after a Grade 3 concussion, he needs to be sidelined.
