UCLA and Arizona weren’t the only teams brawlin’ -- and gettin’ suspended -- this past week.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference of the FCS has suspended an astounding 41 players for at least one game following a post-game fight that broke out between players from Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff last Saturday. UAPB blocked an extra point at the end of regulation to defeat Southern 22-21 when the fight broke out.
“What took place following Saturday’s Southern / UAPB game has no place in college football,” SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said. “The conference is taking this action because of the nature and seriousness of the situation. Officials at both Southern University and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff have been very cooperative in addressing this issue with the conference office, and we thank them for their cooperation. These suspensions send a clear and definitive message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
Arkansas Pine Bluff loses leading receiver Desmond Beverly and second-leading rusher Stephen Jones for two games. Southern linebacker Jamie Payton will also miss two games.
There’s a low-quality video of the fight, but due to some inappropriate language, we can’t post it here.
