The Chargers are expected to release CB Dante Hughes before free agency.
Hughes is owed $1 million and got smoked in slot coverage last season, eventually losing playing time to rookie Marcus Gilchrist. Quentin Jammer, Antoine Cason, and Gilchrist will be the team’s top three corners in 2012.

    Chargers released CB Dante Hughes.
A practice squad mainstay in 2009 and 2010, Hughes failed his tryout as the Chargers nickel back last season. He’ll likely vie for a special teams rule wherever he ends up this offseason. The Chargers are expected to be in the mix for a veteran corner.

Giants signed CB Dante Hughes, previously of the Chargers.
Hughes will provide practice depth following the release of an injured Brian Witherspoon. If he makes the roster, however, it will be due to his special teams coverage.

Colts CB Tim Jennings (ankle) and OT Charlie Johnson (knee) are “still a ways away” from being ready to play, according to coach Tony Dungy.
Jennings is being replaced more than capably in the nickel by rookie Dante Hughes. Johnson, Indianapolis’ swing tackle, should be back relatively soon.
  • FA Defensive Back
Colts CB Tim Jennings (ankle) and T Charlie Johnson (knee) have been ruled out for the team’s Week 1 contest.
Jennings, a second-round pick in 2006, was slated to be the team’s nickel corner. That void will likely be filled by rookie Daymeion “Dante” Hughes.
  • FA Defensive Back
Kelvin Hayden is expected to replace Jason David as the Colts’ starting right cornerback this season.
Daymeion Hughes and Tim Jennings will compete for nickel duties behind Hayden and left corner Marlin Jackson. Hayden, a second-round pick out of Illinois in 2005, was the hero of last season’s Super Bowl win over the Bears.

Colts agreed to terms with third-round CB Daymeion Hughes.
Hughes led the Pac Ten with eight picks as a senior. The former California Golden will be in the mix for nickel duties this season along with second-year man Tim Jennings and fifth-round rookie Michael Coe.
  • FA Defensive Back #33
Colts placed CB Daymeion “Dante” Hughes on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.
The athletically limited but ballhawking former Cal Bear showed promise in his first year before getting injured on Thanksgiving. Hughes will be back to compete with Tim Jennings for nickel duties next season.

    Colts waived CB Dante Hughes.
Hughes lacks athleticism and isn’t much of an option outside of Tampa 2 defenses. He’ll struggle to land a job. Also cut by the Colts: center Steve Justice and defensive back Nick Graham.
