Redskins signed FS Tanard Jackson, formerly of the Buccaneers, to a one-year contract.
That didn’t take long. The Redskins were fully expected to consider Jackson now that former Bucs coach Raheem Morris is running the secondary. Turning 27 in July, Jackson is worth the risk as long as it’s a low-cost deal. He will likely compete with Madieu Williams and DeJon Gomes for the starting free safety job. Jackson’s signing certainly hurts Williams’ chances of making the team.

Redskins agreed to terms with S Madieu Williams, formerly of the 49ers.
The former Maryland star chose to play close to home over joining a better team in the Falcons. Williams is likely slated to compete with 2011 fifth-rounder DeJon Gomes for the starting free safety job. Without special teams value, the 30-year-old could be released before the start of the season if he doesn’t win out in camp.

The Redskins will start fifth-round rookie SS DeJon Gomes over LaRon Landry for the final three games.
Landry is not expected to play again this year thanks to groin and Achilles issues. Gomes has started two games this season, recording 19 tackles and one pass defensed in those contests.

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that SS LaRon Landry will likely undergo surgery on his damaged Achilles.
Reed Doughty will start over O.J. Atogwe at free safety this week, with DeJon Gomes taking Landry’s spot. Shanahan indicated that Landry’s Achilles is not torn, but “it’s been quite sore” going back to the 2010 season. The procedure was recommended after Landry visited with a specialist on Wednesday.
  • FA Defensive Back #24
Redskins S DeJon Gomes left Sunday’s game against the Giants in the first quarter with a chest/neck injury, but quickly returned.
Gomes went down while covering the opening kickoff and was taken off gingerly. It looks like he just got the wind knocked out of him.
  • FA Defensive Back #24
Redskins S DeJon Gomes is expected to take over as the team’s starting strong safety with Brandon Meriweather (knee) out for the season.
Gomes, in his second season out of Nebraska, started the first three games of the season with Meriweather out but was quickly replaced in the lineup by veteran Reed Doughty. Washington coaches are giving him a second chance, though. Pro Football Focus grades Gomes well below average against the run.
  • FA Defensive Back #24
Redskins S DeJon Gomes left Sunday’s Week 16 game against the Eagles with a left knee injury.
The Redskins’ secondary has been in flux as Josh Wilson briefly missed some time after getting shook up early on as well. Gomes is officially questionable to return.
  • FA Defensive Back #24
Redskins SS DeJon Gomes suffered a partially torn MCL in his left knee during Sunday’s win over the Eagles.
Gomes has a Grade 2 sprain, so there’s a chance he won’t miss any time. He hasn’t started since Week 3 of the regular season. The Redskins would likely turn to Jordan Pugh as their rotational safety if Gomes is ruled out.
  • FA Defensive Back #24
    Redskins waived SS DeJon Gomes.
Gomes appeared in 30 games over the last two years for the Skins, compiling 75 tackles and one interception. His inability to improve in coverage led to him losing out to Jordan Pugh and Jose Gumbs.

Lions claimed S DeJon Gomes off waivers from the Redskins.
A run-support safety and special teamer, Gomes made eight starts the past two seasons in Washington, recording one interception and 75 tackles. He’ll fight for reserve snaps in Detroit and try to chip in on kick and punt coverage.
