Virginia redshirt freshman WR De’Vante Cross will serve as a backup cornerback during Saturday’s game against UConn.
Cross (6'2/205) was listed as both a backup receiver and a backup corner in the two-deep depth chart released this week. The Cavaliers are looking to pad out their secondary depth after losing starting CB Tim Harris to injury for the season. “It’s a great opportunity to help the team and a great opportunity for myself,” Cross said, “so I’ll try to take advantage of it. I’m pretty comfortable with both [wideout and cornerback]. You just learn what you’ve got to do, and the rest is up to you.”
  • Virginia redshirt freshman WR De’Vante Cross is feeling an increased comfort level at wideout.
Cross (6'2/205) moved from quarterback to wide receiver last spring and subsequently took a redshirt for the past campaign. “Every day I’m learning. Every day, I learn something new about myself and about the position. It’s just a learning process,” Cross explained. Virginia HC Bronco Mendenhall has taken note of his improvements, saying, “He is somebody I’ve noticed all through our practices, in terms of his ability to make plays. He’s emerged and done a really good job.”
