Dropping off: Josh Van Meter (59th), Nicky Lopez (64th)

  • Ignoring Max Muncy, Ozzie Albies actually leads second basemen in xwOBA this year, but because he’s come away with a .231 BABIP, he’s hitting a modest .231/.310/.478 for the season. Some of that is his own fault; he has the third-highest launch angle in the league, which doesn’t lend itself to producing singles. Even so, Statcast things he should be hitting .279 right now. I dropped him from the top spot because Whit Merrifield is still going nuts on the basepaths (even though he’s not hitting), but I’m not down on him.

  • Brandon Lowe is still hitting just .189, but he did contribute five homers and three steals in May. He’s another guy who Statcast thinks should be performing better; it has him with a .224 xBA, and while that doesn’t sound like much, a .224 average probably would have made him a top-12 second baseman to date. Lowe’s strikeout rate is up, so I’m not projecting him to go back to hitting .260-.270. Still, he doesn’t need to help in average in order to be fairly valuable.

  • Nick Madrigal has held up his end of the bargain as a hitter, but he’s just 1-for-3 stealing bases, with his lone success coming back on Apr. 6. He’s attempted one steal in 43 games since. For that reason, he’s tumbling some in the rankings this month.
