Retired MLB pitcher Mark Mulder impressed during round one of the Safeway Open, carding a 3-over-par 35-40=75 which places him in a share of 134th place, ahead of five PGA TOUR pros.

Receiving a sponsor’s invite to the event, Mulder is not expected to contend but he was doing so for half the round. The retired ace was 2-under thru 6 holes and reached the 14th tee box at 1-under. From there, his round slipped away from him with DOUBLE BOGEY-BIRDIE-TRIPLE BOGEY over the next three holes. As you’d expect from an amateur, tee-to-green is where his game falls short of these guys that do it for a living. Mulder lost 2.092 strokes off-the-tee and another 1.992 strokes on approach. Not recording the low round of the day has to be considered somewhat of an accomplishment here.
