Royal Troon Golf Club appears on the verge of ending its all-male membership after more than three-quarters of its membership supported the notion of adding women to the club’s membership in a survey.
The results come weeks before the club hosts the Open Championship, and weeks after Muirfield voted against allowing women members and was subsequently removed from the Open rota.
Based on the survey results, a special general meeting will be called for July 1, at which time the members are expected to vote on a proposal to change the club’s constitution to allow female members.
“Recently we spoke about the need for our club to reflect the modern society in which we exist and I am pleased that a large majority of members who responded to our survey agree and support opening the club to women,” Martin Cheyne, club captain, said in a statement.
The club, which was formed in 1878, will share host duties for the Open with the Ladies’ Golf Club of Troon, which is allowed to use the club’s facilities.
The Open Championship will be held July 14-17.
