It may not be the biggest event of the year in college golf, but it very well could be the one which comes with the most to lose.
I am speaking of the Regional Championships. In order to qualify for National Championships, a team must successfully navigate its way through this grueling three-day event.
The womens regional bids have been announced, with three sites hosting 21 teams and three individuals on non-participating teams. The top eight teams and two individuals from non-qualifying teams will move on. The others will have their dreams and goals for the season come to a very abrupt end.
But everyone involved in the college game understands the rules, now they just hope to play well enough to abide by them.
One of the great things about college golf is that no one is exempt from this pressure-packed process. You might think Duke and UCLA have had such amazing seasons that they should not have to endure a qualifying process for the national championships. But every team with hopes of winning the years last event must take care of business here first.
The mens Regionals will be out in less than two weeks, and teams will have a very similar path if they hope to make it to The Homestead (host of the National Championships) the first week of June.
Its hard to imagine the best teams not breezing through Regionals, and for the most part that is very true. But just like any big-time sporting event, some of the favorites do falter, while one or two Cinderellas find their glass slipper.
