The team was captained by Robert Harris and included Roger Wethered, Willis Mackenzie and Ernest Holderness. America won 6? - 5? in the first year of the competition which allowed half scores. The Royal and Ancient golf club at St Andrews was founded in 1754 and recognised as the Governing Authority on the rules of the game in 1897.
