AVONDALE, La. – A little change this week did some good for Rickie Fowler. Fowler carded a second round of 7-under 65 at TPC Louisiana to jump into contention at the Zurich Classic.
Fowler went to a left-hand low putting grip in hopes of sinking more putts. The change is one Fowler made several times in high school and on a few occasions in college.
‘It’s something I’ve done before and done it in practice quite a bit,’ he said. ‘Just right now it feels like it’s putting me in a better position at setup and I’m able to stroke the ball a little bit easier and not force anything.’
Combined with a dialed-in iron game, Fowler produced his best round of the season.
‘I did hit some good iron shots which I’ve been struggling on getting the ball close enough to the hole to have some good birdie looks,’ he said. ‘It’s not easy to make birdie putts from 20 and 30 feet all day.’
Fowler was fortunate to play in better conditions than yesterday afternoon. He played his way into a late tee time on Saturday, giving him significant down time he feels is an advantage.
‘Coming off a good round today, I’ll carry the confidence into the weekend with the game but it’s also nice to kind of play two rounds, get a little break, recoup and get ready for the weekend.’
