RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Lexi Thompson isn’t living your average teenager’s life.
At 17, she has winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship on her mind. She also has an interesting prom date on the way.
Opening brilliantly Saturday with birdies at the first three holes, Thompson got to 6-under through 13 holes and within two shots of the lead. She stumbled on the back nine with the winds picking up dramatically. She missed a pair of short putts on her way to a 4-under-par 68.
There’s more than a shot at a major on Thompson’s plate. There’s her first prom date. Thompson is a home-schooled senior scheduled to graduate in May. That’s also around the time of her prom at Coral Glades High School near her home in Coral Springs, Fla. Interestingly, she doesn’t know who her date will be yet. She said Puma and Red Bull, two of her sponsors, are working out a plan to help her pick out her date.
‘I know the fans are going to have something to do with picking my date, but, of course, I’ll have the final say,’ Thompson said. ‘I don’t knowall the details.’
