There’s a “wide gap” between the Broncos’ top four receivers and the rest, including Matt Willis.
Andre Caldwell and Brandon Stokley are competing for the third receiver role behind Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. Willis will have to hold off Gerell Robinson and former Arena Football League star Greg Orton for the final spot.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
The Broncos’ official website singled out WR Greg Orton as a player who “answered the call” in spring practices.
“I really think that he’s making big strides to really push that back end of the receiver group to who’s going to be that last guy to make the team,” said OC Adam Gase. Orton, already 26, has never appeared in an NFL game after toiling around in arena football and on practice squads for the last few years. He has good size (6-foot-3, 199), but his speed (4.69 forty in 2009) is suspect.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
Broncos signed WR Greg Orton and CB Mario Butler to reserve/future contracts.
Both players finished the season on the practice squad. Butler appeared in one game with the Cowboys early in 2012, while Orton has never appeared in an NFL game since entering the league in 2009. They are 53-man roster long shots.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
    Broncos waived/injured WR Greg Orton.
A third-year undrafted free agent, Orton lit up the offseason program and the early days of camp, but suffered a high-ankle sprain on August 3, and never returned. He’ll revert to injured reserve once he clears waivers. Orton should be back next summer to compete for the Broncos’ final receiver spot, but he’s running out of chances to crack a roster.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
Patriots signed WR Greg Orton, C Braxton Cave, OT Jordan Devey, WR Reggie Dunn, OG R.J. Mattes, RB Sam McGuffie and LB Taylor Reed to reserve/future contracts.
A fourth-year undrafted free agent, Orton made waves in the Broncos’ offseason program last season, but went down on August 3 with a high-ankle sprain. He was waived/injured soon after. Already 27, 2014 figures to be Orton’s last chance to crack a 53-man roster.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
Patriots WR Greg Orton suffered a torn Achilles during Friday’s practice.
He’ll now miss the entire 2014 season. 27-year-old Orton was a roster long shot after re-signing earlier this week. A fourth-year undrafted free agent, Orton’s NFL career is likely over.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
    Patriots waived/injured WR Greg Orton.
Orton tore his Achilles’ tendon in Friday’s training camp session.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
Patriots WR Greg Orton was carted off the practice field Friday with what appeared to be a “significant leg injury.”
Orton went down with a non-contact injury, suggesting a possible torn knee ligament. The 27-year-old was re-signed to the 90-man roster this week. If the injury is as severe as initially thought, Orton’s career may be in doubt.
  • FA Defensive Back
Patriots signed second-year S Dax Swanson and Utah DL L.T. Tuipulotu, and released WR Greg Orton and S Jeremy Deering.
Signed by Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 draft, Swanson spent time on both the Colts’ and 49ers’ practice squads in 2013. Swanson does not have elite measurables, but he showed some ball-hawking skills while at Sam Houston State. He will try to establish himself as a special teams player in New England.
  • FA Wide Receiver #16
    Broncos signed WR Greg Orton.
The undrafted free agent out of Purdue has size (6'3/205), but a slow forty time (4.69) at the 2009 Combine killed his draft stock. After spending the last two seasons with the “Spokane Shock” of arena football, Kyle’s namesake (no relation), will be a camp body and long shot to make the final roster.
