Giants S James Butler returned to practice Wednesday and will be able to play this season.
The reserve had a kidney ailment that threatened to end his season, but he will simply wear extra padding for protection.
  • FA Defensive Back
Giants SS James Butler (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Week 8.
Rookie Michael Johnson will likely get the start against the Dolphins.
  • FA Defensive Back
James Butler has secured a role as the Giants’ starting strong safety.
Gibril Wilson is now starting at the free spot. Butler has mostly been a special teamer in his short pro career that began with him going undrafted in 2005. He may be another liability for an awful looking Giants secondary.
  • FA Defensive Back
Giants SS James Butler suffered a hamstring injury Sunday and didn’t return.
Butler, who has been marginally productive in his first year starting, was replaced by rookie Michael Johnson. Butler’s status for Week 8 is uncertain.
  • FA Defensive Back
Giants SS James Butler (hamstring/ankle) is expected to miss the Giants practice on Tuesday.
Butler was injured during the Giants win over the Niners on Sunday and did not return. Rookie Michael Johnson replaced him and would be the likely starter in Week 8 if Butler cannot go.
  • FA Defensive Back
James Butler is currently working as the Giants’ starter at free safety.
Butler has been a steady reserve the past two seasons and is in the hunt to overtake Will Demps, who was a major free agent disappointment in 2006.
  • HOU Defensive Back
Safety Will Demps took reps with the first-team defense at Giants practice Monday.
He could form a three-man rotation with James Butler and Gibril Wilson the way things are looking now. Demps isn’t guaranteed his starting job back.
  • FA Defensive Back
Giants FS Gibril Wilson did not practice on Wednesday.
He appears likely to miss at least another game, although he did do some running. SS James Butler also missed practice, and Craig Dahl, who started last week, sat out with a sprained ankle. Michael Johnson was the team’s only practicing safety.
  • FA Defensive Back
The Giants are expected to be without both their starting safeties this week; FS Gibril Wilson (knee) and SS James Butler (hamstring).
A check-down loving Donovan McNabb couldn’t take advantage of rookie fill-ins Craig Dahl and Michael Johnson last week, but maybe Todd Collins can. Wilson did do some running Friday, so there’s hope he’ll play in Week 16.
  • FA Wide Receiver #80
Giants WR Plaxico Burress (ankle), MLB Antonio Pierce (ankle), and Ss James Butler (hamstring) and Gibril Wilson (knee) were on stationary bikes at practice Friday.
Burress is questionable, but the most likely to play of the four, while Wilson is almost certainly out. Pierce will probably be a game-time decision. Butler is expected to play, but his not practicing Friday is a bad sign.
