Rams selected SMU LB Justin Lawler with the No. 244 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Lawler (6’4/264) was a three-year starter and four-year contributor on the Mustangs’ defensive line, tallying 39.5 career tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks. He blocked six kicks on special teams, including three as a senior. Snubbed for a Combine invite, Lawler showed why with a 5.02 forty and 27-inch vertical at SMU’s Pro Day. Ultimately, Lawler was a good college pass rusher whose skill set is unlikely to translate smoothly to the far-more-athletic pros.
  • Seventh-round OLB Justin Lawler was working with the Rams’ first-team defense at OTAs.
A three-year college starter at SMU, Lawler tested poorly athletically at his Pro Day but produced 20.5 sacks in college and now enters a wide-open Rams’ edge-rusher group. For now, Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre are penciled in as the probable Week 1 starter, but Lawler and fellow rookie fifth- and sixth-rounders Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Trevon Young are in the mix.
