Cowboys C Phil Costa’s knee injury is an aggravation of his preseason PCL sprain, and his status for Week 3 is uncertain.
It’s bad news for an extremely thin Cowboys’ offensive line. Costa was given a 2-to-4 week timetable for his preseason injury, so it’s highly unlikely he’ll be active against the Redskins next Monday. Undrafted rookie Kevin Kowalski filled in at center on Sunday, and should get the call in Week 3 if Costa is indeed out.
  • FA Guard #61
The Cowboys aren’t expecting either G/C Bill Nagy (high-ankle sprain) or C Kevin Kowalski (undisclosed) to be ready for Week 1.
It means the Cowboys have precious little camp competition for shaky starter Phil Costa. For now, Costa will compete with David Arkin and undrafted free agent Harland Gunn, but executive VP Stephen Jones hasn’t ruled out signing a veteran free agent. Center is a glaring weakness for Big D.

The Cowboys will activate OL Kevin Kowalski (ankle) from the PUP list next week.
Kowalski hasn’t practiced since training camp and likely isn’t close to returning. With Phil Costa (ankle) expected to miss at least two more weeks, however, he could be added to the active roster. The Cowboys have a three-week window to add Kowalski or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

Cowboys activated C Kevin Kowalski from PUP and placed S Matt Johnson on season-ending injured reserve.
Kowalski has been out with an ankle injury since training camp and will add depth behind Phil Costa, but with Costa and Ryan Cook out this week, he could see plenty of action. Kowalski was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo prior to 2011. Johnson, a fourth-round rookie, has been battling a hamstring issue since the summer and didn’t play a snap this season.

Phil Costa (knee) left Sunday’s Week 2 game against San Francisco in the fourth quarter.
He was replaced by rookie Kevin Kowalski. Costa had knee issues during the preseason, so his early exit from Sunday’s game has to be a concern. The Cowboys are extremely thin across their offensive front.

Cowboys OL Kevin Kowalski will be sidelined 2-4 weeks with a bruised knee.
More woes for the Cowboys’ interior line, and likely a fatal blow to Kowalski’s roster chances. The 2011 undrafted free agent spent the majority of 2012 on the PUP list.

Cowboys OL Kevin Kowalski saw playing time at fullback during OTAs.
Kowalski spent most of last year on the PUP list due to an ankle injury and will need to prove he’s healthy to avoid being cut. With Lawrence Vickers (back) questionable for training camp, the Cowboys don’t currently have any other fullbacks. Kowalski would be strictly depth if he makes the 53-man roster.
