Chargers TE Kory Sperry is unlikely to make the team’s 53-man roster.
Sperry was originally non-tendered this offseason, but was later signed to a one-year deal. With four superior receiving tight ends on the roster, however, Sperry is the likely odd man out. San Diego will go forward with Antonio Gates, Randy McMichael, Dante Rosario, and rookie Ladarius Green.
  • FA Tight End #89
Chargers re-signed TE Kory Sperry to a one-year deal.
Sperry was originally non-tendered this offseason, so he’s likely back on the very cheap. A poor blocking tight end, Sperry has made just five catches for 104 yards since being signed off the practice squad in November 2010. That, despite the fact that Antonio Gates was inactive nine times during that span. He won’t be a lock to crack the Week 1 roster.
  • FA Tight End #89
    Cardinals signed TE Kory Sperry.
Sperry will take over as the fourth-string tight end following Todd Heap’s release. A poor blocker, Sperry has just eight receptions for 136 yards since entering the league in 2009.
  • FA Tight End #89
Chargers signed Colorado State TE Kory Sperry.
Sperry caught 141 passes in college and was one of the most athletic TEs at the Combine. This isn’t a great fit behind Antonio Gates and the Bolts’ valued backups, but Sperry will draw interest after he’s cut this summer.
  • FA Tight End #89
    Chargers released TE Kory Sperry.
Sperry is very athletic and will probably catch on with another team.
  • FA Tight End #89
Dolphins signed TE Kory Sperry off their practice squad.
This is a sign that the Dolphins aren’t comfortable with Anthony Fasano’s strained hip. Fasano is a game-time decision, and if he doesn’t play Sperry could get some snaps behind Joey Haynos.
  • FA Tight End #81
Randy McMichael was held without a catch in Monday’s Week 11 game.
McMichael suffered an early leg injury, but was able to return on a limited basis. He was visibly bothered by the injury, and had just one target on the night. There’s been no word on the nature of severity of his injury. Kory Sperry saw a majority of the snaps at tight end on the night.
  • FA Tight End #89
Chargers signed TE Kory Sperry from their practice squad.
It could be an indication that the Chargers aren’t expecting Antonio Gates to suit up for Monday Night Football, though Kris Wilson is banged up, as well. Randy McMichael is likely to start at tight end against the Broncos.
  • FA Tight End #81
Randy McMichael briefly left Monday’s game with a leg injury, returned for two plays, but then had to go to the locker room. He then returned midway through the second quarter.
McMichael came back just in time for an end zone target, but had his look knocked away by CB Reynaldo Hill. He was seen dragging his leg following the play. The locker room trip was to get McMichael re-taped, but he came back to the sideline visibly limping.
  • JAC Defensive Lineman #59
Broncos waived LB Jammie Kirlew, WR Alric Arnett, TE Nathan Overbay, LB Johnny Williams, OT Paul Duncan, and TE Kory Sperry.
Kirlew is the best bet for the practice squad out of this group. He was a seventh-round pick in April’s draft, but was outplayed by undrafted rookie Kevin Alexander. Duncan, another undrafted free agent, played at Notre Dame.
