Aaron Judge is in right field and batting second for Sunday’s Game 2 showdown against the Blue Jays.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone will not make any changes with New York facing Blue Jays rookie sensation Trey Yesavage following a lopsided series-opening defeat earlier this weekend. Here’s the full lineup: Trent Grisham (CF), Judge (RF), Cody Bellinger (LF), Ben Rice (1B), Giancarlo Stanton (DH), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3B), Ryan McMahon (3B), Anthony Volpe (SS) and Austin Wells (C).

Yankees added C J.C. Escarra to the roster for the AL Wild Card Series against the Red Sox.
That means the Yankees with carry three catchers with Austin Wells and Ben Rice also on the roster. Perhaps Rice will be used mostly as a first baseman in this series, but Escarra has been in the minors for the entire month of September, so this comes as a bit of a surprise.

Austin Wells went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and a run scored as the Yankees bested the Orioles 7-0 on Thursday evening in Baltimore.
Wells smacked a run-scoring single off of Cade Povich in the third inning that increased the Bombers’ advantage to 3-0. The 26-year-old backstop also worked a walk in the seventh inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge. With his two-hit evening, Wells is slashing .215/.272/.437 with 21 long balls, 68 RBI and five stolen bases on the season.

Paul Goldschmidt is starting against a right-hander for the first time in eight days on Friday.
That right-hander is Kevin Gausman, who Goldschmidt is 10-for-19 with a homer and five walks against lifetime. With Goldschmidt in the lineup, Ben Rice is catching and Austin Wells is on the bench tonight.

Austin Wells is out of the lineup versus a righty for a second straight game Tuesday against the Twins.
Ben Rice is catching over Wells for the third time four games. Since homering in three straight games early last month, Wells has hit .156/.200/.234 in his last 19 contests. He’s gone nine straight games without an RBI.

    Yankees optioned C J.C. Escarra to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Escarra was demoted to clear a spot on New York’s active roster for newly acquired outfielder Austin Slater. The 30-year-old rookie has been phenomenal defensively this season, but his roster spot is expendable with Ben Rice capable of handling the backup catching duties behind starter Austin Wells.

Austin Wells went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against the Mets on Sunday.
Wells’ home run was No. 13 on the season for him. The 25-year-old catcher belted a solo home run in the third inning off Zach Pop to get the Yankees on the scoreboard. Wells added another RBI on a ground out in the fourth inning. He’s hitting .220 on the year, but has provided power with 13 home runs and 48 RBI.

Austin Wells (finger) returned to the Yankees’ starting lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Blue Jays.
The 25-year-old backstop had missed each of the team’s previous four games due to artery damage in his left index finger that had been giving him an intermittent cold sensation and discoloration. He’s behind the dish and batting eighth against Chris Bassitt and company on Thursday evening in Toronto.
  • NYY Catcher #28
Austin Wells (finger) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays.
It’ll be Ben Rice drawing the start at catcher with Wells receiving another day off. The 25-year-old backstop is dealing with artery damage in his left index finger that leads to an intermittent cold sensation and discoloration. The positive news is that additional testing, including an invasive procedure, ruled out any potential blood clots or an aneurysm. It seems like he’ll avoid the injured list and there’s a chance he’s back in New York’s lineup at some point later this week.
  • NYY Catcher #28
Austin Wells is dealing with a circulation issue in one of the fingers on his left hand.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wells underwent testing that ruled out any potential blood clots and that the issue hasn’t impacted his on-field performance. He added that the 25-year-old backstop will remain on the bench through Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays, but could potentially return on Wednesday. It’ll be J.C. Escarra and Ben Rice handling the catching duties in his absence. There’s always a risk Wells could require a trip to the injured list if the issue persists, but it sounds like there’s optimism he’ll be ready to return at some point later this week. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.
