It’s merely a procedural move to open a spot on Detroit’s 40-man roster for reliever Burch Smith. Horn has been on the shelf working his way back from last year’s elbow surgery since the end of spring training.

Horn is recovering from left elbow surgery and remains without a definitive return timeline.

Horn, 27, is back in the minors with Kyle Finnegan activated off the 15-day injured list. Horn will need an injury to return to the majors before the postseason.

The 27-year-old southpaw was away from the team for a couple of days as he welcomed a new addition to the family. He returns to a 2.16 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a 7/5 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings through his first seven appearances out of the Tigers’ bullpen. Drew Sommers was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move on Thursday.

Horn will be away from the club for the next couple days on paternity leave. It’ll be rookie Drew Sommers taking his spot in Detroit’s bullpen.

Detroit has opted to swap southpaw middle relievers ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Mets, bringing Horn back from the minors while jettisoning rookie Drew Sommers after a couple tough outings.

Horn heads back to the minors after spending less than one week in Detroit’s bullpen. The 27-year-old southpaw has compiled a strong 1.50 ERA across six innings (five appearances) this season at the big-league level.

Horn is back with the Tigers for a third time after allowing one run in 2 2/3 innings during his first two stints. He had a 3.06 ERA and a 44/18 K/BB in 35 1/3 innings out of the pen for Toledo.

Horn heads back to Triple-A having allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings for the Tigers.

Horn will be a depth option for the Tigers over the two games against Washington. He’ll all but assuredly be sent back down after the conclusion of that twin-billing.
