Sawyer Gipson-Long (left oblique strain) is scheduled to throw a bullpen on Friday.
Gipson-Long, who ended last year on the injured list with a neck injury, has been delayed to start spring training with an oblique injury. His return to the mound on Friday is a good first step. With Troy Melton (elbow) sidelined and Reese Olson out for the season, Gipson-Long’s health could be important for the Tigers early in the season.

Tigers placed RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury during Thursday’s disastrous outing against the Yankees. Probably from whipping his neck around too quickly to watch all of the hard-hit balls off the Yankees’ bats against him. No word on how long he’ll be shelved for. José Urquidy was activated from the 60-day injured list to take his place on the Tigers’ active roster.

Sawyer Gipson-Long was absolutely obliterated in Thursday night’s loss to the Yankees, giving up seven runs on seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work.
The right-hander struck out three on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The Yankees scratched out a pair of runs against him in the second inning, then added another pair in the third in solo shots by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. The 27-year-old hurler now holds a horrifying 7.18 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 26/6 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings on the season. There’s no guarantee that he’ll get to make another start — or function in a bulk role — on Wednesday against the Guardians.

Sawyer Gipson-Long was hit hard in Tuesday night’s loss to the Mets, surrendering six runs on five hits in his four innings of work.
The 27-year-old right-hander struck out three batters on the evening while issuing a pair of free passes. He served up a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the opening inning, then kept the Mets off the board until they erupted for five runs in the fourth inning — the final three on a two-out, three-run blast by Luis Torrens. Gipson-Long generated nine swings and misses on 70 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll try to put this one behind him and move on as he carries a 5.59 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 23/6 K/BB ratio (29 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Yankees in New York.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Chris Paddack is being moved to the bullpen.
Paddack recorded a calamitous 5.40 ERA and served up eight homers in 30 innings since being acquired at the trade deadline from the division-rival Twins. He surrendered three runs and lasted only 3 2/3 innings last Friday against the Royals. He’s expected to be available to pitch in relief as early as Tuesday’s game against the Mets. It’s probably Sawyer Gipson-Long taking his spot in Detroit’s rotation for now.

Tigers recalled RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long from Triple-A Toledo.
Gipson-Long will get a start tonight against the Mets and is expected to stick around afterwards. He’s a reasonable bet to be effective for the Tigers, but he probably will experience quick hooks. He last completed five innings in an outing on June 28.

Sawyer Gipson-Long will start on Tuesday against the Mets.
It’s a challenging matchup for Gipson-Long, in what figures to be a one-and-done spot start. The 27-year-old righty has compiled a respectable 4.32 ERA across 25 innings (six appearances, two start) this season at the highest level. There would be some streaming appeal in an easier matchup, but he’s best left on the waiver wire outside of extremely deep mixed leagues.

Tigers optioned RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long to Triple-A Toledo.
Gipson-Long came off the IL on Wednesday and pitched two scoreless innings in relief in the 1-0 win against the White Sox. Now, since he wasn’t going to be able to throw tonight or tomorrow, he’s gone again. That’s just life as a middle reliever with options.

Tigers activated Sawyer Gipson-Long from the 15-day injured list.
Gipson-Long has been on the IL with a neck injury since July 2nd. He’s made two rehab starts in Triple-A and has built up to 57 pitches so far. With no clear spot in the Tigers’ rotation, it seems that he could operate as a bulk reliever for now.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) allowed two runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings for Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.
Gipson-Long struck out three and walked one while throwing 41 of his 57 pitches for strikes and registering a 27 percent whiff rate and 30 percent CSW. His fastball velocity was right in line with what we’ve seen from him this season, and he seems healthy. There is no spot for him in the Tigers rotation now that Chris Paddack is in town, but we’re not convinced that Paddack is a better option than a healthy Gipson-Long.
