    Rose nearly worked his way back to the majors by going 13-5 with a 3.30 ERA between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville in 2004. He’ll be a longshot to break camp with the Reds, but a couple of strong months in Triple-A could earn him a callup.

    Brian Rose underwent surgery Friday to reattach a torn ligament in his ankle with two screws and will spend spring training rehabbing.
    He suffered the injury when he slipped and fell on some ice while jogging in Massachusetts. Even though he had a nice comeback season in 2004, Rose would have been a big long shot to win a spot in the Cincinnati pen this season. The former Red Sox prospect 13-5 with a 3.30 ERA between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville last year.

    Rose, Carlyle, Field and Greinke each worked one scoreless inning in games this spring. Turman had given up two runs in two innings. Of this group, Rose and Field are the top candidates to see time with the Royals this year. Greinke was the team’s first-round pick in 2002.

    Rose, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2001, is returning from a torn ankle ligament suffered when he slipped on some ice in January. By going 13-5 with a 3.30 ERA between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville last year, he had earned himself an invitation to spring training before getting hurt.

    The Reds have other pitchers they’re more interested in looking at, but Rose still might get a brief chance to make an impression in September. He’s 10-2 with a 3.19 ERA, 104 H and 84/15 K/BB in 104 1/3 IP for Chattanooga.
