The Giants are signing Luis Arraez to a one-year deal, sources told ESPN’s Jorge Castillo.
It’s worth $12 million, according to The Athletic’s Katie Woo. Arraez wanted to play second base, and the Giants have decided to give it a try, though they would have room for him as a first baseman/DH if they need to send down Bryce Eldridge. Initially, though, it’ll be Casey Schmitt he’s displacing from the lineup. Arraez, of course, will be bringing three batting titles with him to San Francisco, but his OPS+s have dipped from 128 in both 2022 and ’23 to 107 in 2024 and 99 last season with the Padres. Given his lack of defensive value, he really needs to rebound beyond his 2024 production to be a quality regular.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Giants are “aggressively pursuing a second baseman and have been engaged with Chicago on Nico Hoerner and St. Louis on Brendan Donovan.”
The Yankees have also reached out to the Cubs about Hoerner, but all indications, for now, are that the Cubs would rather hold onto Hoerner and trade Matt Shaw. Both Hoerner and Donovan are high-contact rate hitters who would provide nice balance to a Giants infield that features power bats in Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers. Nothing appears imminent, but the Giants don’t appear comfortable beginning the 2026 season with Casey Schmitt or Christian Koss as their starting second baseman.

Casey Schmitt underwent surgery Tuesday to remove a carpal boss from his left wrist.
Schmitt will need 8-10 weeks to recover after having the mass removed from his hand, so he should still be ready for spring training. As of right now, he likely tops the depth chart at second base for the Giants, with Tyler Fitzgerald and Christian Koss also in the mix. However, there’s a good chance the team will add a veteran to at least compete for the spot.

Casey Schmitt went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer in the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday.
Schmitt put the Giants on top with a three-run blast off Kyle Freeland in the second inning to drive in three of the team’s four runs in Saturday’s victory. The 26-year-old infielder has hit .238/.306/.402 with 12 homers and 40 RBI across 347 plate appearances.

Casey Schmitt had both Giants hits, including a solo homer, in Monday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.
Schmitt’s homer was hit 418 feet off Zac Gallen. He also had a soft single on a night in which the rest of the Giants combined to go 0-for-27. He’s building a nice case to enter 2026 as the Giants’ second baseman while hitting .240/.308/.406 in 316 plate appearances this season.

Casey Schmitt went 2-for-5 with a solo homer against the Rockies on Tuesday.
Schmitt was originally out of the lineup nursing an elbow injury before he was forced into the game with Matt Chapman and Willy Adames ejected following a bench-clearing scuffle. Schmitt proved to be just fine, taking Antonio Senzatela deep for a solo homer in the fifth inning, his tenth of the season. The 26-year-old infielder has been playing regularly at second base and should get back to starting duties on Wednesday.

Casey Schmitt (elbow) is absent from the lineup for Tuesday’s contest against the Rockies.
Schmitt will get some extra time off to rest and recover after being drilled on the right elbow by a pitch during Monday’s contest. The positive news for the 26-year-old infielder is that initial X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures so he’s day-to-day for now.

Casey Schmitt is day-to-day with a right elbow contusion after X-rays came back negative for any fractures.
Schmitt, who has been snake-bitten by untimely injuries this season, was hit by a pitch on the right elbow during the early stages of Monday’s contest against the Rockies. He appears to have avoided serious injury, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he needed a couple days off to rest and recover.

Casey Schmitt had a three-run homer, an RBI double and a walk in leading the Giants to a 7-1 win over the Brewers on Saturday.
The Giants did all of their scoring in the sixth and seventh innings after Freddy Peralta left the game. Schmitt’s homer was his ninth in 67 games this season. He’s hit .286/.347/.531 with four homers in 71 plate appearances this month, which should help him remain in the lineup as a regular at second base with Matt Chapman having reclaimed the hot corner.

Casey Schmitt (forearm) is back in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Padres.
Schmitt is back at the hot corner and batting cleanup following a quick two-game absence over the weekend nursing a right hand contusion. The 26-year-old should see regular action at third base while Matt Chapman (hand) remains on the injured list.
