Andrews heads west to bolster San Francisco’s relief depth just a few weeks after electing free agency following his removal from New York’s 40-man roster. The 27-year-old lefty made just one relief appearance earlier this year for the Yankees and holds a lackluster 5.84 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 28/22 K/BB ratio across 24 2/3 innings (20 appearances) this season at the Triple-A level.

Andrews was designated for assignment on Thursday but elected free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment. The 27-year-old allowed a solo home run while getting just one out in his only MLB game this year and has a 5.84 ERA in 24 2/3 innings at Triple-A as well. He’ll look to latch on with another organization.

Andrews was shipped back to the minors following Tuesday’s game against the Mariners to make room for Tommy Kahnle to return from the injured list ahead of Wednesday’s showdown.

Andrews has allowed 11 runs on eight hits in 15 innings while striking out 18 but walking 12. The Yankees put him on waivers in April but he went unclaimed. He was promoted after Ian Hamilton was placed on the COVID-19 IL.

One could speculate that this move could be the first domino for a Jordan Montgomery signing, but we’ll have to wait and see if the Yankees decide to pursue that in the coming days. Either way, Andrews, who was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Brewers in February, will be stretched out at the Triple-A level. In his five appearances this spring, Andrews allowed six earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
