Abrams takes a seat for the third consecutive game as he continues to deal with a sprained left ankle that he suffered earlier this week. The 25-year-old fantasy standout is expected to make the gradual transition to second base during the final few weeks of the season with Nasim Nuñez taking over temporarily until sizzling-hot top prospect Seaver King, who has homered eight times in 16 games since the start of August, is ready to take over the position. He figures to be ready the moment rosters expand in September, which makes him a worthwhile stash in deeper mixed leagues. The Nationals also have intriguing infield prospect Devin Fitz-Gerald, who came over in the MacKenzie Gore trade last offseason, making noise in the upper minors as well.

The 20-year-old Fitz-Gerald, who was acquired from the Rangers in the MacKenzie Gore trade, has been a big success in hitting .269/.377/.538 with 12 homers and 11 steals in the South Atlantic League this year. He’s still playing all over the infield at the moment, but he seems most likely to wind up at second base, and if he keeps progressing like this, he could see the majors in 2027.

The switch-hitting Fitz-Gerald, a teammate of Roman Anthony in high school in Florida, missed the end of last season but impressed with a .318/.423/.542 line in 31 games in Rookie ball. He opened the season sharing time between second, third and short, but the Rangers had committed to him at short just before injury struck. Between 2025 first-rounders Eli Willits and Gavin Fien and 2024 picks Seaver King (10th overall), Luke Dickerson (second round) and Fitz-Gerald, the Nationals are truly loaded with infield prospects, though none figure to contribute this year.

The Nationals are set to receive a package of five prospects in return: infielders Gavin Fien and Devin Fitz-Gerald, outfielder Yeremy Cabrera, first baseman Abimelec Ortiz and right-hander Alejandro Rosario. It’s a tremendous get for the Rangers as Gore will bolster the top of their rotation with a strong left-handed arm that they were solely lacking. The 26-year-old southpaw registered a 4.17 ERA and an 185/64 K/BB ratio across 159 2/3 innings with the Nationals in 2025. He’s under team control through the 2027 season.
